Digital and Cyber Group at SIPA
The Digital and Cyber Group (DCG) at Columbia SIPA was founded in 2016 to provide a central platform for students that connects them to the wider cyber community through events, competitions, and online resources. DCG’s mission is to make SIPA the leader in digital and cyber policy education by integrating those subjects into the curriculum and highlighting the intersection between digital and cyber issues and the other salient subjects of our time.
Courses and Capstones
Columbia SIPA offers an array of innovative classes for policy students around topics related to cybersecurity, internet governance, and the digital economy, as well as capstone workshops providing students with practical experiences on such cutting-edge issues.
New York City Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge
SIPA hosts a regional Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge every fall semester. Started by the Atlantic Council in 2013, Cyber 9/12 is a one-of-a-kind competition designed to provide students across academic disciplines with a deeper understanding of the policy challenges associated with cyber crisis and conflict. The competition gives students a unique opportunity to interact with expert mentors and high-level cyber professionals while developing valuable skills in policy analysis and presentation. The students have to tackle challenges like assessing the impact of a major cyber attack, thinking through attribution and national responsibility, and response options for all branches of the government as well as the private sector.

SIPA Cyber, with support from SAP, aims to lower the barriers to entry into the industry by providing students with study resources, training, and exam vouchers to take the CompTIA Security+ certification.
RSA Conference hosts top student scholars that demonstrate a strong commitment to cybersecurity. Selected SIPA students will gain access to the conferences' interdisciplinary program that advances technical, human, and legal approaches to information security.
Each summer, SIPA Cyber organizes a trip for students and recent graduates to meet with SIPA alumni and senior industry professionals across the fields of cybersecurity, intelligence, and government.
